From that first moment of awe to making music yourself—it’s never too late to begin!
Do you remember the first time you heard a hammered dulcimer? That haunting, beautiful sound that stopped you in your tracks and made you think "I need that music in my life."
You’re not alone—and it’s never too late to make it happen.
But then reality hits: scattered online tutorials, conflicting advice, and the overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start.
Hammered Dulcimer from Scratch changes all that, giving you a proven path from that first inspiring moment to music you’ll love to play—with expert, encouraging support. You get a step-by-step guide to help you feel more confident, grounded, and connected to your dulcimer, whether you’re just starting out or circling back to strengthen your foundation.
Even experienced players will benefit from a fresh, thorough review of the fundamentals.
You’ll be playing right from the start and building skills you’ll use for years—with steady encouragement from Mary Lynn Michal, Ken Kolodner, and Simon the Sloth, our resident mascot.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
In Hammered Dulcimer from Scratch, you’ll learn from two experienced, supportive teachers who know how to make the process comfortable, achievable, and fun.
Mary Lynn Michal and Ken Kolodner bring decades of performing and teaching experience to this course. Between them, they’ve taught hundreds of players at the renowned Sandbridge Hammered Dulcimer Retreat and festivals across the country.
Get to know them in this short video, and see why so many students trust them to guide their dulcimer journey.
Laurie McCarriar (with help from Simon 🦥) asks Mary Lynn and Ken the questions new players want answered. See what they say—then catch the full interview inside the course.

🎬 Before Step 1, you’ll get a few videos and resources to get started. You'll get to know your teachers, understand how to follow along with the videos, and make the most of the course..
You’ll even meet Simon the Sloth 🦥, who has a few helpful tips of his own.
Learn to play from the ground up without tension or strain. You’ll learn how to stand (or sit), hold your hammers with ease, strike cleanly, and build habits that lead to accuracy and great tone. It’s all about setting yourself up for success from the very first day. (10 videos)
You’ll play your first major scale, explore three different scale patterns, and find out what Left Hand Lead really means. Through guided practice, you’ll build control, confidence, and coordination. Then you'll see a scale in action by learning your first tune: Ode to Joy. (4 videos)
Step 3 orients you to Bridges and Key Markers and shows you the importance of 5ths and Octaves in understanding the layout of the hammered dulcimer. Ken adds just the teensiest bit of theory (Simon approved) to explain how the instrument is organized using the Circle of Fifths. (5 videos)

This step shows you how to name any note on your dulcimer using patterns, shapes, and intervals—no need to memorize them all at once. Reinforce as you go with the Note Naming Deck of Cards or the Mystery Solved videos. Since note naming can feel a little tedious, we’ll put your new skills to work right away with the hauntingly beautiful melody of Evening of Roses. (5 videos + BONUS)
In Step 5, you’ll learn five Root Position Arpeggio patterns and why you need to know all of them. With clear demos and guided practice, you’ll start to “see” chords instead of naming notes one at a time. Then you’ll apply your new skills by learning the backup for Evening of Roses. (9 videos)
This step explores root position, first inversion, and second inversion shapes using Pachelbel’s Canon as your practice track. You’ll go beyond just playing notes—you’ll learn which note to start on, identify which note names the chord, and learn to see every interval in the shape. (9 videos)
You’ll learn how paying attention to phrases in Southwind—a jam session favorite—can make a melody easier to learn and remember. Then you’ll study Harmonic and Melodic Intervals and how to see them clearly on the dulcimer. Finally, you’ll apply your new skills in a Two-Note Chord version of Southwind, working section by section with guided practice. (17 videos)
This is probably your first fiddle tune! In this step, you’ll learn the Johnny Cope Main Melody with Mary Lynn and a simple arrangement with Ken. Along the way, you’ll explore new ideas like swing, accents, and backbeat—while also drawing on earlier skills like intervals, chord shapes, and hammer control. (12 videos)

🦥 Simon says: Learn at your own pace (and take plenty of naps!)
Simon’s our official pacekeeper. He reminds us to keep things slow and clear, and occasionally pops into the videos with helpful tips, snack suggestions, or urgent nap alerts.
He’s also pretty sure he’s the mastermind behind the entire course. (We let him think that. He’s cute.)
How long will I have access to these lessons?
Lifetime access to everything in this course, all future updates, and any bonuses we add. Once you’re in, you’re in for good.
What does this Early Bird Rate really mean?
You’re getting the complete course at a special price while we’re still uploading the final lessons. Over the next few weeks, Laurie (and Simon 🦥) will be adding the final lessons in between naps and practice sessions, —but you can start learning immediately with the foundation lessons that are already live.
As an early student, we’d love your feedback to make the course even better for you and future learners.
Do I need to read music to take this course?
Not at all. We teach step by step, by ear and by visual patterns on your dulcimer. If you can read music, that’s a bonus, but it’s not required.
Will this work for my dulcimer?
Yes.While we demonstrate on a specific model, we show you how to adapt the lessons to your instrument, whether it’s smaller or larger.
What if I’ve already been playing for a while?
Perfect—many experienced players discover gaps in their foundation that this course fills. You’ll find yourself playing with more confidence and ease, plus you might pick up techniques you’ve been missing.
What if I’d like more help?
We’ve got you covered. After joining, watch for opportunities to get personal guidance through Zoom sessions, live Q&As, or even in-person workshops.
